An old photo of Heidi and me at Randy’sThe other week we made a trip to Randy’s Records in SLC with Angie and Aaron. Despite our excitement and an almost unbearable desire to buy LOADS of records… we left empty-handed. We made a trip to Randy’s and had nothing new to spin when we got home (and nothing to spin on because all of our equipment is still in storage!). As hopeless as this all sounds, we still had a great time (and a good laugh at ourselves for defying the odds); just being in a record shop with a soul gave me great cause to rejoice.
On the other hand…
I came across this article the other day and it gave me a feeling of hope; a hope that is threatening to blink out when I read things like Ashlee Simpson held a #1 spot on Billboard’s Top 200 last week. The article focuses on the legendary John Peel who is a brilliant reminder that there are people in the world who love music… well, he’s not currently a reminder, because he died last year… hmmm… now I’m depressed.*blink*

I love vinyl. I love the ritual. I love making sure my needle is tracking properly. I love checking the record surface for dirt and smudges and I love cleaing them off. I love the gentle pop when I put the needle down and I love how I always forget to pick it up when the side is over. And I love that warm smooth sound...
Vinyl baby. Vinyl.
Exactly. And I could (and have) sit there watching the record turn and turn and turn, hypnotized, while 'Highway 61 Revisited' or Brubeck's 'Time Out' plays...
"Oh, How does it feel?"
Yep, it's time. We've got to get it set up again.

Hey Mike,
Indeed, John Peel was an example to us all. A music hoarder, and an adopted East Anglian too. Also an amazingly funny guy - check out this great quote from the 'ledge: (which I've seen on a few t-shirts since)
"I've always imagined I'd die by driving into the back of a truck while trying to read the name on a cassette, and people would say, 'he would have wanted to go that way.' Well, I want them to know that I wouldn't."
cheers!
Steve
Brilliant!
