Thursday we basically just took it easy and wandered through the York city centre. The weather was decent enough and we were able to see a number of the older buildings and churches that are everywhere. Many of them are ‘of no significant historical importance’ other than they are a few hundred years old. We are still at the point where we can just wander through the town, not having any real purpose or goal, and be totally entertained by the history and culture (a feeling that we also get just walking to Tesco Metro in Norwich). We also took a nice stroll through a park with Seth, Emma, and Emily. Mike, quite literally, fell on his head while doing an obstacle course with Seth… unfortunately, the photographer was laughing too hard to get a picture, but we do have a picture of the moment just before his complete display of muppetry. You’ll note how he balances himself on the chain with what appears to be deft ease, while sporting a smug look of self-assurance... Fell. On. His. Head. Although, not before doing this somersault/horizontal pirouette thing. Muppetry.
Today’s Swing Ball, the Sport Center / Match of the day version:
Who are we kidding; there really wasn’t any way that Smith could sustain the level of play he showed the night before. Dockrill, sensing this like a hawk, immediately swept in and broke Smith’s opening service. From there on out, it was all Dockrill, as Smith couldn’t seem to hit anything but the string.
Final score: Dockrill wins, 5-3
String fouls: 39
Injuries: Smith may have sustained a sprain in his hand as we saw the bat slip from his grip at one point in the match and sail through the shrubbery. As a result of this dangerous manoeuvre by Smith, Dockrill fell to the ground clutching his stomach. Reports from nearby supporters claim that this was from laughter, but our medical correspondent says it was more likely the result of ‘highly intense play’ by the young Briton.
Tomorrow: Scarborough, the Sea Life Park, and loads of lovely excitement!

the writer hereof is definitely keeping this commentator entertained... But the falling on his head was probably a humbling moment, yes?
love you both ant ree
only humbing in the sense that I was choosing my own path and not listening to the sagely advice of those around me...
so, pretty much, yeah. thanks for pouring a little salt in that wound. why don't you just kick my dog while you're at it. :)
we love you too aunt ree.
thanks for the comments.
"'Mirth and merriment'? Well, uh...' *puffs cheeks slightly in an expression of shocked bewilderment* 'I think the question we need to be asking is, 'What kind of image does this leave with our young viewers?' Surely the International Swing Ball Comission would expect a more dignified behaviour for all of the budding athletes watching. I guess only time will tell. Smith flings his bat, Dockrill floundering on the pitch? I don't know what to think. Jim?..."
Great pictures of Ye Olde York, Preston and t'lakes. Micklegate Bar brings back numerous memories -I lived on there for my second year (sadly, not on the Bar itself - tho that would have been an experience).
Hmmm. Methinks Dockrill was clearly supreme in all things swingball, and that all this other talk is just Smith's long way round of saying that he is desperately out of shape and needs to improve his hand-eye co-ordination. What about some incentives. How about making the swingball a meatball? would that make you pay more attention? Or would you just not play, and eat it straightaway?!
Mind you, regarding co-ordination, I'm not one to talk: I once hit my gym teacher in the face with a frisbee, -I wanted it to go north, but my hand thought otherwise.

The chap in the Micklegate bar museum said that it was the 'driest bar in York', and we all enjoyed a shifty-eyed chuckle.
Unfortunately, I think that playing with a meatball would only make it hurt less when it smacked me in the face. Although it might make a good charity event, on par with Red Nose Day.

Any possibility of importing swing ball to the states? Turn this into a traveling tournament.
